Rerouting a dryer vent in Berkeley homes

Berkeley's pre-1940 housing stock rarely has a short path out. Laundry often sits mid-basement or under the house. The duct then crawls 20 to 40 feet through joist bays with several 90s. Much of it is original foil flex or white vinyl. It sags between joists and holds lint in every dip. Rerouting means finding a shorter, straighter exit, not replacing what sagged.

The first thing we look for is a nearer exterior wall or rim joist. Every elbow you delete buys back airflow that cleaning alone cannot. Smooth rigid metal replaces flex on the long run. Flex, if any, stays short and only behind the dryer. Seams get foil tape, never screws into the airstream.

Condos and converted flats are harder. No exterior wall means a chase up to a roof cap. Those runs get rerouted only when the chase allows it. Otherwise we shorten and straighten what exists.

Gas dryers in basements and garages change the stakes. A restricted duct can push combustion products back into the room. That moves a reroute from comfort to safety.

Some reroutes are not worth doing. If the existing run is already short, straight and rigid, cleaning the hood and flapper is the real fix.
